Burbank, California, is home to several of the largest companies responsible for providing entertainment of all types. Warner Bros. Entertainment, NBC Universal, and The Walt Disney Company all have properties located in or around the Burbank area.
Dr. David Burbank, for whom the original town was named, began selling farm lots on May 1, 1887. Continued growth, which was not impeded by a drought and depression that plagued Los Angeles in the 1890, led the town to seek, and be granted, incorporation as a city on July 8, 1911.
As of 2008, Burbank is the 15th largest city in Los Angeles County. Its size, however, does not make it hard to navigate through and around the city. The Golden State Freeway, which is the name for I-5, runs through the city from a northwest to southeast direction. The Ventura Freeway offers Burbank resident’s access to US 101, thence to points south; the Foothill Freeway provides an eastern access.
Those who choose to take advantage of public transportation, however, can catch the Metro, which offers two different types of light-rail transportation, as well as conventional subway access. From there, one can take buses, cabs, or other modes of transportation to various destinations in and around Burbank.
Entertainment opportunities range from the exciting times that can be had in the many clubs, restaurants, and shopping venues available in Hollywood, which is only 10 minutes away by car, to more sedate, back-to-the-good-old-days nostalgia that is provided by the oldest remaining Bob’s Big Boy Restaurant.
Those who wish to live in Burbank and enjoy both its small-town feel and its closeness to the "big city" can find single-family homes in price ranges from moderate to very expensive, in sizes from cozy to sprawling. In addition, Burbank has a fairly wide selection of multi-family units, which include apartment units, as well as condominiums and townhouses, for those who prefer this type of dwelling.
The Magnolia Park area prides itself on its small-town feel. Most of the homes in this area were built in the 1940s, in response to the growing housing needs of World War II veterans. Despite efforts to modernize this area, the residents staunchly maintain their desire to have a place to live that emulates a slower, simpler time.
The Burbank Unified School District offers families with school-age children to call Burbank home eleven elementary schools, three middle schools, and three high schools for their children’s educational pursuits. In addition, there are at least five private schools, three of which provide education for children in grades K5-8, one for grades 9-12, and one which access to all grades, from K5-8, within the same campus/organization setting.
