Canoga Park, CA Real Estate

The town of Canoga Park was founded March 30, 1912. However, even though the LA Aqueduct brought water from Owens Valley to the area (thus the reason the town was originally called "Owensmouth"), Canoga Park lacked a way of providing water to its residents. For this reason, it chose to merge with Los Angeles on February 26, 1917. Canoga Park remained known as Owensmouth from the time of its founding, through its merger, until 1930, when it was changed.

Canoga Park is a mixture of both suburban and rural areas with some industrial areas included. The rural area still provides location sites for film production including stunt work. In addition, there is still enough land,and enough feed businesses exist so that people can still enjoy horse riding or other related activities.

Just because Canoga Park is considered suburban/rural does not mean it is "in the middle of nowhere." The city of Los Angeles is just a short drive away (approximately 30-35 minutes) via US-101S. This allows residents access to the "big city" with all its ensuing attractions, nightlife and shopping.

Canoga Park has the distinction of being the site of the first ever two-story air-conditioned shopping mall in the United States. That mall, whose real name is Westfield Topanga, but is more commonly known as Topanga Plaza Shopping Mall, still operates today. In fact, has been and still is undergoing extensive renovation, which began in 2006. Expansion plans are in the works that will bring in additional retail shops to the mall.

The availability of single-family homes, which ranges from moderately-priced ones in and around Canoga Park to those that are in the gated community of Canoga Lakes, only make it more appealing. In addition, Canoga Park boasts many choice in apartment living. Some of these apartments are located in homes that were once meant to be lived in by only one family, but have since been converted into separate units.

The Los Angeles Unified School District has three elementary schools, a middle school and a high school for the residents of Canoga Park. There are also two private schools to serve the city.
