Cerritos, CA Real Estate

home buyersCerritos, also known as "Dairy Valley", was incorporated on April 24, 1956. At the time of its incorporation as a city, cows outnumbered residents and its primary focus was agriculture and dairy farming; hence the reason for the name. When it became apparent that dairy farming and agriculture were no longer the prime source of residents's income and growth and development began occurring, it was decided that the name of the city should be changed to "Cerritos," which is Spanish for "little hills." This name change became official on January 10, 1967.

Cerritos has several major freeways running through and along its boundaries. The "Artesia Freeway," known as SR91, literally runs right through the middle of the city, while I-605 runs along Cerritos's west side. Interstate-5 touches the northeast border of Cerritos. Cerritos runs the public transit system "Cerritos on Wheels" (COW). This is a federally-funded transportation system, whose name was coined in recognition of the City's origins. Riding the COW also benefits the environment as COW buses run on clean-burning fuel. COW riders help reduce air pollution and traffic by keeping their cars off the road.

Cerritos prides itself on providing access to cultural events and venues through its Center for the Performing Arts and Sculpture Garden. The Performing Arts Center offers performances in many areas including music, dance and theater. The Sculpture Garden offers a beautiful setting in which to view a collection of public artwork that continues to grow.

The Millennium Library has many reference sources available, all housed in a building that in itself has made its mark on history. The structure was the first one to use titanium panels on the exterior. The City of Cerritos also has a float in the Tournament of Roses Parade each year.

Single-family homes in this lovely city are for the most part contemporary/modern in architectural design and are available in many price ranges. In addition, there are a number of town homes, many located on gated properties. Students are educated by the schools within the ABC School District, with nineteen elementary schools, five middle schools and five high schools. There are eight other private schools available, as well as advanced education opportunities at Fremont and Cerritos Colleges.
