The City of Compton was incorporated on May 11, 1888. Compton has a rich history, which it is striving to preserve through the preservation of the Heritage House. This home, whose rustic appearance provides a stark contrast to the modern architectural styles of today's houses and buildings, is slated to eventually become a museum. Exhibits in the museum will give the visitor a glimpse into how life was in Compton in the 1800s.

Compton is home to a large number of single-family and multi-family residences. Individual homes embrace contemporary/modern or ranch architectural designs; many homeowners have enhanced the curb appeal of their homes by constructing wrought-iron or other decorative fences. These not only add to the home's attractiveness, but also allow one to see just exactly where one's property and/or lot boundaries are. Many single-family homes also have guesthouses. These additional residences can be rented or sold, providing the original owner with a nice source of additional income.

Compton has 14 public schools located in and around the City, as well as in the unincorporated areas. These consist of six elementary schools, three middle schools and three high schools in the unincorporated area and seventeen elementary, five middle and two high schools in the city itself. Seven different establishments provide private-school education. Most of these serve students in Grades K-8; although two serve students in Grades 1-12; one parochial school has a separate elementary and middle school and another parochial school is available for students in Grades K-8.
