Downey, CA Real Estate

The area known as Downey dates back to 1771, when the Mission San Gabriel Arcangel was established. The founding of this mission and its surrounding lands are what actually served to give birth to what is now the modern Los Angeles area. This mission is considered a California State Historical Landmark. The City of Downey itself was incorporated in December 1956.

Downey is the location of two significant parts of fast-food history. The third McDonald's Hamburgers restaurant ever built was located in the city. The original restaurant built in 1953 is still in operation and is the oldest surviving McDonald's. You can still enjoy one of the many food selections McDonald's has to offer in this historic building and then visit a gift shop and museum located on the same property. Downey was also the location for the first Taco Bell restaurant. Glen Bell opened the doors to this now-nationwide establishment on March 21, 1962.

For these reasons, one can hardly walk down the street in Downey without literally running into history. So, those who wish to live in what is literally the birthplace of Los Angeles can do so in one of the many single-family homes that are available. Downey is served by one elementary school-Alameda and two middle schools-Griffiths, formerly known as North Junior High School and Sussman, which was once known as South Middle School. Two high schools, Columbus and Warren (named after Earl Warren, 14th Chief Justice of the United States). Pius X Catholic High School Alumni Site, which is now Matthias High School and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish School Alumni Site provide parochial school educations; St. Mark's Episcopal School is also located in Downey.
