Granada Hills, CA Real Estate

Originally founded in 1927 as simply “Granada,” then renamed “Granada Hills” fifteen years later, Granada Hills has a very fascinating claim to fame. Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev visited the area on September 19, 1959. Khrushchev’s original reasons for wanting to visit California, and specifically, Hollywood, was to tour Disneyland and meet John Wayne. Security concerns prohibited him from meeting either Mickey Mouse or John Wayne; however, in an effort to placate him, he was taken on a tour of a modern American neighborhood. This neighborhood was located on Sophia Drive in Granada Hills.

Mr. Khrushchev, unfortunately, was underwhelmed, and made no attempts to hide his displeasure. As a result, he was not given a warm welcome by the residents of Granada Hills nor, for that matter, any other inhabitants of the Los Angeles area where his entourage was present. In fact, two reported attempts; both unsuccessful, on his life were later discovered to have occurred.

Today, Granada Hills still enjoys recognition as a site in which many TV episodes and movie scenes are filmed. These include such shows at Hannah Montana, which makes use of Granada Hills High School to film the high-school scenes of that show, and location shots for My Name is Earl, just to mention two. Its popularity as a movie/TV location-shoot site may be due to the fact that the Ronald Reagan Freeway, I-5, and I-405 can so easily access it.

Those who wish to simply live quietly in Granada Hills, however, can do so in one of the many homes located in several neighborhoods in that area. Homes range from moderately-priced houses boasting architecture that is simple, understated, yet beautiful in its own right, to more expensive homes that are built in the very popular “mid-century modern” style of architecture.

Those who do live in Granada Hills can send their children to Granada Hills High School, as well as John F. Kennedy High School for their high school education. Elementary students can attend one of Granada Hills’s seven elementary schools, and three middle schools. These public schools are served by the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Parents who wish to educate their children in private schools may send their children to one of four private schools which can accommodate children who are in preschool, kindergarten, or first grade, to sixth or eighth, depending on the school attended. One faith-based (Christian) school does offer classes in all grades, from kindergarten to twelfth grade.
