Hawthorne, CA Real Estate

Located five miles from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Hawthorne was incorporated as a city in 1922. Several unincorporated communities surround it. Access to Los Angeles from Hawthorne is available through the light-rail (METRO) line that runs down the center of the Century Freeway (I-105). One can also drive to Los Angeles from Hawthorne via I-105, I-405, and I-110.

Fans of the rock and roll group The Beach Boys as the boyhood home of Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson almost immediately recognize Hawthorne. Although their original home no longer exists, having been torn down to accommodate I-105, the site in Hawthorne is recognized as a California Historic Landmark.

Hawthorne also has the distinction of having been the birthplace, childhood home, or previous residence of many other notable figures, which include movie stars, sports heroes, and music artist. In addition, it has been the setting for a number of movies, including The Fast and the Furious—Tokyo Drift, and Pulp Fiction.

Hawthorne does have a fairly well known resident and meter maid--the character on Mad TV known as Bunifa Latifah Halifah Sharifa Jackson (played with utter abandon and hilarity by Debra Wilson). Hawthorne, however, does pride itself on having a low-key atmosphere, in spite of its colorful, famous characters, and movie notoriety, and welcomes anyone who wishes to take advantage of its close proximity to LAX to consider Hawthorne when looking for a place to live in the Los Angeles County area.

This is evident through the fact that it offers two very new, very modern townhome/condominium complexes—Fusion at South Bay, and San Marcus Development. Another development, 360 at South Bay, is currently under construction. There are a number of single-family dwellings available in the City of Hawthorne, offering the homeowner a wide selection of residence, besides the townhomes, condominiums, and apartments from which one may wish to choose.

Families with school age children can choose from one of the eleven available elementary schools, four middle schools, and four high schools. In addition, there is an Adult Education Center available. These public schools fall under the Hawthorne, Centinela Valley, and/or Wiseburn School Districts. Hawthorne also offers seven private schools for parents to choose from for their child or children’s education. Most of these schools offer education for children in grades K-8; one faith-based (Christian) school allows children to attend from kindergarten all the way through the 12th grade. In addition, there is one Islamic school located in Hawthorne, which serves grades K-8.
