Lawndale was incorporated in 1959. Part of "The Heart of South Bay" (which just happens to be the city's motto) is located next to Redondo Beach, which makes it easy for you to reach one of Los Angeles County's and Southern California's prettiest beaches.

Lawndale itself holds many community activities during the year, some of which commemorate certain seasons of the year. The city holds a Halloween carnival, providing its children with a safe, fun way to enjoy this holiday. The fall season also signals the start of apple-picking time. Lawndale's location makes it easy for you and your family to plan an outing on a weekend during the fall to one of the many apple orchards that allow you to pick your own fruit. Apples are one of the easiest fruits to pick, and this is a great way to teach small children that apples don't really come from a plastic bag in the grocery store.

Each year, at the start of the Christmas season, the City of Lawndale holds a ceremony in which the lighting of the Christmas Angel Tree is the highlight. Lawndale also holds a multicultural fair every year. This fair showcases the cultures of the many diverse ethnic groups that can be found not only in Lawndale but also in and around Los Angeles County.

At one time in Lawndale's history, renters outnumbered homeowners; this is not the case today. Single-family homes in Lawndale are extremely affordable making it possible to own a home within the community. These nice, neat homes are built in the traditional, functional "ranch" style. There are also some multi-family properties located in Lawndale. These range from apartment complexes with only a few units to larger apartment buildings and condominium properties that can support a larger number of residents.

Residents in Lawndale send their children to one of the six public elementary schools, two middle schools and three high schools. There is also a charter school. T. J.'s Learning Center is a private school located in Lawndale. It offers education for students in Grades 1-12.
