Lomita, CA Real Estate

Incorporated in 1964, Lomita (which is Spanish for "little knoll") is home to Lomita Railroad Museum. This small museum, designed to serve as a replica of the Boston and Maine's Greenwood Station, which is located in Wakefield, Massachusetts, showcases the period in railroad history when the steam engine was most popular. Opened in 1966 by Irene Lewis and her husband Martin, this museum, when it was constructed and began operation, became the first of this type in a location west of Denver, Colorado.

Additionally, the steam engines that were owned by Mrs. Lewis herself were used in filming movies that required such a "prop." Two of the movies that feature her engines are "The Greatest Show on Earth," a 1952 circus movie and "Von Ryan's Express", a 1965 World War II movie. Many steam engine replicas are on display in the museum, making it a "must-see" attraction for the train buff in the family. The Lewis's also used this museum to provide steam engine kits. These kits can be used for the construction of one's own live steam engine.

Single-family homes in Lomita are moderately priced. Some of the homes reflect the Spanish influence so prevalent in California through their architectural style; others are more modern/conventional in appearance. Many of the homes in Lomita are or were built in such a manner that it makes it easy for the owner to convert the structure into duplex residences. This allows two families to live in what is (or was) literally a single structure. In addition, other homes have small residences, some attached, others separate, which can be used as rental homes. Most of these have one bedroom and one bathroom, which make them suitable for a single person or a couple just starting out.

The Los Angeles Unified School District provides four elementary schools, two middle schools and five high schools for residents of Lomita. There is also a magnet school located in Lomita. There are also several "faith-based" private schools available.
