Manhattan Beach is an incorporated city located on the coastline of the Pacific Ocean. One of the three "beach cities" (Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach are the other two), it was incorporated on December 7, 1912.

Los Angeles County owns the beach itself. Lifeguards are on duty, the beach is regularly patrolled and there are county-maintained facilities for the beachgoer's convenience. This makes Manhattan Beach a popular destination for both residents of Manhattan Beach itself as well as Los Angeles residents and tourists. Part of "The Strand," a twenty-nine mile paved thoroughfare used by pedestrians (bikers, skaters, rollerbladers, joggers, walkers, anything but cars) runs through Manhattan Beach. It is possible to literally walk from Manhattan Beach all the way to Santa Monica Beach one way or from Manhattan Beach to Redondo Beach the other way.

Homes in Manhattan Beach range from more-expensive ones near the ocean, to more moderately priced ones further away from the water. Wherever you decide to live, you will find plenty of homes, built in the modern/contemporary style from which to choose. There are also many condominium properties. Some of these are located right on the beach; others are further away, but still just as attractive.

Students who live in Manhattan Beach go to one of the five elementary schools that are located in the City. They then attend the middle school and high school that serve Manhattan Beach. There are two private schools. One is considered an elementary, as it serves students in Grades K-6. The other one can be considered an elementary/middle school as it holds classes for students in Grades K-8.
