Marina del Rey is located four miles from the Los Angeles International airport (LAX). It is surrounded on all four sides by the City of Los Angeles. Via Marina and Via Dolce provide the boundaries for the part of Marina del Rey that is considered unincorporated. The area is within walking distance of Venice Beach. The strip of land that comes right up to the beach, and that portion of the beach itself that lies west of the harbor are within the City limits of Los Angeles. State Route 90 (Marina Freeway) links Marina del Rey directly with I-405, which proceeds to Culver City.
There is plenty to do in Marina del Rey! There are a world of options and a multitude of water and boating activities, sightseeing, skating, biking. Every conceivable type of watersport is offered, from boats and watercraft you pedal, paddle, sail, or drive to windsurfing, sunbathing, swimming, and surfing. Other aquatic options include boat charters, harbor cruises, and ocean fishing. Shopping enthusiasts can enjoy a wide variety of local boutiques and a select roster of national retailers. Nearby shopping destinations include Venice, Santa Monica and Beverly Hills.
Marina del Rey is very small; however, it has managed to pack quite a number of single-family homes and multi-family dwellings (most in the form of condominiums) as well as town homes, in its limited area. One can choose from a number of upscale, exclusively priced homes. The majority of the single-family residences are all either on or very near the marina, peninsula, or beach. All of the homes are, of course, multi-level, in order to make the most judicious use of the space available.
One home in particular is tucked away in a not-as-well-known, but still very “chi-chi” part of Marina del Rey. This home is only two stories in height, and is done in the French Normandy style of architecture. It sports a beautiful red peaked roof. This bright splash of color makes the white exterior of the home stand out all the more brilliantly. It is both pleasing and relaxing to look at. This home is very unique, and quite different from any of the other homes in the area.
Likewise, one multi-family dwelling is actually a cottage, in which the original structure was built in the 1920s, and the back unit was added on in 1988. The front of the cottage is a two-bedroom, two-bath home, with a living room, dining area, and space for a third bedroom or loft room. The back unit is one bedroom, one bath, with its own unique characteristics. So, as one can see, one does have choices in Marina del Rey. It’s just all a matter of knowing where to look.
Marina del Rey itself has no schools in the immediate area. However, the schools that serve Marina del Rey are Coeur d'Alene Avenue Elementary School, Marina del Rey Middle School, and Venice High School. These schools operate under the auspices of the Los Angeles Unified School District.
