Oxnard was incorporated as a city on June 30, 1903. Although Henry Oxnard is the one for whom the city is named, he nor his three brothers never actually lived in the City of Oxnard. Rather, the town emerged as a result of the beet industry that Mr. Oxnard and his brothers brought to the are. Mr. Oxnard never intended to name neither the town nor the city after himself. He wanted to name it “Zachari”, which is the Greek word for “sugar”, but, frustrated with the bureaucratic difficulties he encountered, he simply ended up giving the location his own name.

Oxnard is located in Ventura County, CA, and is the largest city in the county. It is best known today for its prolific harvests of strawberries and lima beans, thus earning for itself the reputation of being considered the “capital” of these two plants. Oxnard is extremely accessible to almost every part of Southern California. Mass transit and transportation systems, which include, but are not limited to Amtrak, Union Pacific, Metrolink, Greyhound, and Intercalifornias have Oxnard as a regularly scheduled stop.

Oxnard has two large U.S. Naval bases—Port Hueneme and Point Mugu. Because of this, housing is plentiful. A diverse mix of single-family residences and multi-family dwellings (condominiums and town homes) are available, offering a wide selection of styles and price ranges from which to choose. The majority of homes are very moderately priced. Only a few are considered high-end priced homes. This makes it easier for one to select a number of homes in a fairly extensive price range.

There are also a number of school choices. The Oxnard Union High School District has eight high schools in that district. Two of the high schools in the Oxnard Union High School District are targeted to specific students. One is a charter school; the other school, which shares a campus with another high school in the district, serves those students who have children.
