The first inhabitants of Pacoima, a district in the San Fernando Valley, were the semi-nomadic Tongva and Tataviam Native American tribes; the name Pacoima in fact comes from the Fernandeno language and translates to "the entrance". Today, the area is home to more than 100,000 residents. Pacoima is a multi-cultural, working class community located in the northeast San Fernando Valley.

Pacoima Beautiful is a resident-driven, bilingual, multi-cultural, community-based organization. Pacoima Beautiful’s mission is to empower the Pacoima community through programs that provide environmental education, advocacy and local leadership in order to foster a healthy and safe environment. This organization has a history of bringing together residents, organizations, university faculty and classes, elected officials and regulatory agencies around environmental justice and environmental health issues in the community and working toward positive change.

Pacoima's location and easy access to Los Angeles makes it a desirable place to live. Homes are moderately priced, and reflect both the modern/contemporary and traditional ranch style of architecture. They have enough square footage so that you don't have that cramped feeling. There are some very attractive town home and condominium properties for Pacoima residents. Some of the condominium properties have swimming pools and other amenities that are available to those who live there. Eighty percent of the homes in the area are single-family residences.

Seven elementary schools (two of which are charters), two middle schools, and two high schools serve Pacoima, and are part of the Los Angeles Unified School District. There are also two independent charter schools in Panoima. These two schools, however, are listed as being "private" schools, rather than being classified in the same category as the public schools.
