Port Hueneme (pronounced "Wy-nee'mee") lies 60 miles northwest of Los Angeles, straight up US-101. It is only 40 miles south of Santa Barbara. Port Hueneme was incorporated in 1948.

Port Hueneme became a "charter city" in December 1996, following the approval of voters. This approval came during the general election held in November 1996. Becoming a charter city meant that Port Hueneme would be able to exercise more control over its own local affairs, as opposed to a "general law" city. Basically, it allows the city to exercise more "home rule" in those things that directly affect the city.

Port Hueneme is known for its annual beach festival, which features food, rides, exhibits, "carnival" games, vendor booths selling jewelry and other items, and live musical performances by various articles. In addition, several fishing charter companies operate fishing excursions out of Port Hueneme. Fishing trip packages can be as short as half-day trips, or as long as two-day trips. The longer trips provide participants with a place to sleep on the boat, the bait for fishing, meals and snacks.

Homes in Port Hueneme are very moderately priced. The area is home to a naval base. There are also many condominium properties, town homes, and apartment complexes. Those military families who have a member currently deployed overseas may wish to live in one of these, as oftentimes the management companies provide a lot of on-site amenities which can be prove very convenient and helpful to those who "keeping the home fires burning".

Students attend one of the nine K-6 elementary schools and two junior high schools in Port Hueneme. High schoolers attend nearby Oxnard High School. There is also a Christian private school, and a Presbyterian-affiliated private school available in Port Hueneme.
