Sherman Oaks is a neighborhood within Los Angeles. Sherman Oaks is accessed by several different roads, among them the Ventura Freeway, San Diego Freeway, and, most famously, Mulholland Drive, which actually comprises its southern boundary. Sherman Oaks was one of the first communities in the San Fernando Valley area to see growth in the area of residential population. The land was bought for residential development based on the success that the Los Angeles Aqueduct was to bring.

Many people have heard of the Sherman Oaks Galleria. The movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) was filmed here as well as Commando (1985) with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The Frank Zappa Valley Girl song (1982) references the mall as well. Today, the Galleria is jokingly referred to as "the mall that isn't a mall." It is an open air mall that has a mix of restuarants, shops, gyms and the new ArcLight Movie Theater.

Sherman Oaks is considered a very affluent neighborhood. Homes in Sherman Oaks run the gamut from homes for one family to condominiums that can house several families, on each floor. Additionally, your single-family home may sit "smack-dab" between two of these towering condominium properties. There are homes that are a little more "outside" the more urban part of Sherman Oaks. However, one should remember that the residential areas are, as a general rule, neither exclusively single-family nor multi-family.

The public schools of Sherman Oaks are part of the Los Angeles Unified School District. Public elementary schools in the area are: Chandler, Dixie Canyon, Kester Avenue, Riverside and Sherman Oaks Elementary Schools. Secondary schools in the area include Millikan and Van Nuys Middle Schools. Older children can attend U. S. Grant High School and Van Nuys High School. Private schools include several parochial schools, as well as schools that are supported by individual denominations, religions, or ethnic groups In addition, a number of private "academies" operate independently of any school system or specific category. Advanced educational opportunities exist at the learning center campus for the National University. In addition, Devry University has a campus in the Sherman Oaks Galleria.
